How to install nivo slider in WordPress

Nivo slider is a very popular plugin for jQuery that allows you to show a nice slider feature on your webpage, you can download it from here.

After you download the nivo files on your desktop, go to your FTP manager and upload the /css and /js files to your theme’s folder:

After you have it uploaded to your server, you will include in your header.php file.

For the .css file, include the following line before the </head> on your header.php file:

<link rel="stylesheet" href="<?php echo get_stylesheet_directory_uri(); ?>/css/nivo-slider.css" type="text/css" media="screen" />

For the .js file, include this line inside your <body> on header.php:

<script src="<?php echo get_stylesheet_directory_uri(); ?>/js/jquery.nivo.slider.pack.js" type="text/javascript"></script>

Remeber that you have to have a call for jQuery already done on your theme’s header. If you don’t have it still, nivoslider is not going to work.  See an example on how could you include your jQuery library.

After you do this, save your changes and you’ll be ready to include your slider html code anywhere you want your nivoslider to show.

Before you do that, just be sure the links for your files are well done.  Go and see your Page Source and locate the lines that have the word “nivo” on them:

Just click on those links, and be sure you don’t get a 404 error…  if you get a new page with code like this one, you’re ok:

Now you’re ready.  Nivoslider is installed on your wordpress theme and you can activate sliders all around your wordpress theme.
